Each time there is an earthquake, people are left without homes, without safe food and water, and without jobs. This has made it difficult for Haitians to be healthy. The children served by the Kids Farm Program live in Mackendal, one of the most deprived regions of Jeremie.

By learning about sustainable agriculture, the children are able to provide food not just for themselves and their families, but for others in their community as well. Scripture. Children in the Kids Farm Program read Bible stories related to farm work. One that they read is Jesus’ Parable of the Seed and Sower. Lead them in acting out the story, having one child be the farmer, and the others be the seeds that fell into different soil. Pray, giving thanks for those who grow the food we eat. Music. Gather a variety of seeds (available at a local feed and grain store, or use bird seed). Create seed art by drawing an outline of a design with a marker, painting inside the lines with white glue. Find seeds of plants that are easy to grow, and have the children plant the seeds in the pots.

Do you have a vegetable garden that needs plants or weeding? Invite a gardener to come help the children in planting and caring for these. Visit. Invite farmers or gardeners to come talk with the children about the job they do in planting and harvesting. Or take your class to a local community garden. Invite a leader of the garden to talk to the children about that garden.
Cook. The children at Kids Farm Program eat the food they help to grow. Mangos and watermelons are two fruits they grow. Use these fruits to enjoy a healthy snack. As you eat, talk about what other healthy foods people grow that the children enjoy eating. Fundraising Ideas.
